Theo Walcott: Gyokeres Needs Time to Adapt

Mansion Sports Arsenal legend Theo Walcott has urged supporters to be patient with Viktor Gyokeres following his challenging Premier League debut.

The Swedish striker came under scrutiny after a disappointing performance in Arsenal’s narrow 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

During the match, Gyokeres lasted just 60 minutes before being replaced by Kai Havertz. Throughout his time on the pitch, he failed to register a single shot and often appeared isolated from his teammates in the attacking line.

Walcott: Adapting to the Premier League Takes Time

Speaking on the podcast It’s Called Soccer, Walcott admitted that making a Premier League debut—particularly at a venue as intimidating as Old Trafford—is never an easy task.

He stressed that Gyokeres will require time to reach the expected levels of sharpness and match fitness.

“Your first game at Old Trafford is always difficult. Personally, I needed three to four matches just to get back into peak condition. Gyokeres will also need considerable time to be fully ready,” Walcott explained.

He further noted that Gyokeres struggled due to a lack of support and limited opportunities during the match.

“He was completely on his own, especially with Saka and Martinelli not performing at their best. Imagine once those two regain their form—Gyokeres will certainly appear far more dangerous.”

Arsenal Must Prioritize Results Over Style

Walcott also emphasized the importance of focusing on results rather than playing style, particularly in the early stages of the season.

He recalled Arsenal’s glory days, when the team often secured narrow 1-0 victories away from home.

“In the end, results are what truly matter. Especially at the start of the season, these points are crucial. Nobody remembers how the team played when the win is secured,” said the former Arsenal winger.

A Major Investment That Requires Patience

Arsenal made a significant financial commitment to bring Gyokeres in as their main striker this season.

However, adapting to the physical intensity of English football, building chemistry with new teammates, and adjusting to a more demanding league is far from an instant process.

Gyokeres’ success in adapting will likely play a pivotal role in determining Arsenal’s ability to challenge Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea in the race for the Premier League title this season.
