Olivier Giroud Confirms His International Career Has Officially Ended
Mansion Sports – Veteran French striker Olivier Giroud has reaffirmed that his chapter with the national team is over, insisting it is now time for the younger generation to take the torch. The statement comes as he enjoys an impressive start to life with his new club, Lille, in Ligue 1.
A Bright Start at Lille
Giroud joined Lille this season following a one-year stint in Los Angeles. The 38-year-old wasted no time making an impact, scoring in back-to-back league matches.
In a post-match interview, he praised his team’s resilience against AS Monaco and commended the contributions of new arrivals who have quickly adapted to the squad.
Firm Stance on International Career
When asked about the possibility of returning to the French national team, Giroud made it clear that his time with Les Bleus has come to an end and that the responsibility now lies with younger players.
“No, as I have already said before, I received a remarkable tribute in March. I was deeply touched and honored. For me, that was the end. It is now the younger generation’s turn to continue the story,” he told L’Equipe.
Final Chapter in Major League Soccer
Giroud moved to Major League Soccer (MLS) after leaving AC Milan last year, but his time at LAFC did not unfold as expected.
He registered only five goals and three assists in 38 appearances before deciding to return to Ligue 1 with Lille.
His strong start in France has fueled speculation about a potential return for France’s World Cup campaign, although Giroud officially ended his international career following Euro 2024.
Recent Achievements and Future Goals
Giroud recently netted his 350th career goal for both club and country during Lille’s clash with Monaco. He is set to feature again when Lille face Lorient on August 30.
Reflecting on his milestone, Giroud said, “It is incredible and very satisfying. I hope to score more goals. I was also told I am close to 900 matches. Statistics have never been my strength, but I am here to deliver efficiency, provide experience, and finish the work my teammates begin. It feels great.”
