Mansion Sports – Arsenal opened their 2025/26 Premier League campaign with a narrow but significant victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford. 

The match also marked one of the most anticipated moments of the season: the Premier League debut of Viktor Gyökeres in an Arsenal shirt.

Signed from Sporting CP, the Swedish striker was immediately trusted to lead the attack from the first whistle. However, his debut was far from spectacular. 

Gyökeres struggled to make a meaningful impact and appeared not yet fully in sync with Arsenal’s rhythm of play. 

The game served as a reminder that he still requires time to adjust to the physical intensity and fast tempo of the Premier League, which stands in sharp contrast to the Primeira Liga, where he had previously thrived.

Following the match, Bukayo Saka shared his thoughts on Gyökeres’ first outing. While the debutant failed to score or create significant chances, Saka emphasized the importance of his effort and determination.

“I was impressed with his work rate. The match was tough, full of physical battles, but I think he performed fairly well,” Saka commented.

“He has given us something to build on for the future. I believe that will help him in the coming weeks. He is already adapting well, as are the other new signings,” he added.

A Physical Battle with Matthijs de Ligt

Throughout the contest, Gyökeres found himself engaged in an intense duel with Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt. Despite his persistence, the Swedish forward was unable to register a single shot on target. 

This reflected a broader issue for Arsenal, who, despite claiming victory, managed only three shots on goal in the entire match.

Arsenal Secure a Vital Win at Old Trafford

Despite Gyökeres’ subdued debut, the most important takeaway for Arsenal was their ability to begin the season with a victory at a notoriously difficult venue. 

The result marked only Arsenal’s third away win at Old Trafford in the past decade—a significant milestone, considering their previous triumph at the “Theatre of Dreams” came in 2006.

Looking Ahead to the Emirates Stadium

With the Old Trafford hurdle behind them, Gyökeres, Saka, and the rest of the Arsenal squad now turn their focus to the next challenge. 

They will host Leeds United at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, August 23, in their first home fixture of the season. 

The team will be eager to deliver a more convincing performance in front of their supporters and continue building momentum early in the campaign.
